We often don’t think about this aspect of workout nutrition but it can be just as important as your pre and post workout nutrition. Taking care of your body while you are putting stress on it can be tricky but there are a few things that you can do to make sure you’re doing the most for your body.

Hydration is the first thing many people think of when they think about putting any type of nutrition in their body during a workout, and thats a great place to start. Water is the quickest and easiest thing to have with you. If you are taking in about 200-250ml per 15 min you’re on the right path. You may want to have a bit more if the temperature is hot or if you’re perspiring more. You want to avoid big gulps so you don’t upset your stomach.

A sports drink may be appropriate, especially if the workout is lasting more than 1 hour. You would want to have water and a sports drink. Many sports drinks are very high in sugar so its often a good idea to dilute it with some water first.

For all of us who want to maintain and build muscle it is also important to have some protein and carbohydrates within the first 10-15 min of your workout. 20-40 grams of protein and 40-80 grams of carbs is what you should be aiming for. If you’re looking to put on some muscle you’ll want to be near the higher end of this, and if you’re going for weight loss you’ll want to be at the lower end. You can find bars and shakes that have this nutritional content in them (the Quest Bars we carry in the gym are a great option). The one thing that is better about a shake over the bar is that you can absorb it faster which allows your body to use it more rapidly. Make sure you’ve got your shake ready for right after your workout or have us make you one at the front desk.

We all want the best for our bodies and taking care of it during your workout is just as important as any other point during the day. If you are taking in enough hydration and nutrition thoughout your workout you’ll notice better performance, maximal focus, maximal concentration and of course, the gains you’re looking for.
