6 Holiday Treat Ideas That Can Make A Big Difference

As the holiday season is upon us, the temptation to eat and bake treats and tasty things is enormous. The hardest part about this is finding foods that will be delicious and won’t add inches to our waistline. Here are 6 choices you can make to lower your caloric input over the next few weeks.

1. Choose gingerbread cookies instead of sugar cookies. In a single 2 inch cookie you are having 30 less calories, 3g less of carbs and 1g less of fat. We all know that we never eat just one cookie so after the 2, 3 or 12 that we eat we can see the difference it would make.

2. Choose a sugar-free peanut butter cup over peanut butter balls. The chocolate/peanut butter combination is usually a big hit so finding a low cal sugar free option is a must. If you can you are going to find a 50 calorie, 6 carb, and 3g of fat difference.

3. Making your own chocolate covered cherries over buying them from the store can save you around 45 cal, 7g of carbs and 2 g of fat. The one you find at the store generally has a layer of fondant between the chocolate and the cherry that you can do without.

4. Truffles are delicious but choosing a dark chocolate square instead is a difference of 130 calories, 14g of carbs and 8 g of fat per piece. Not only will you avoid the hit on your waistline, your wallet will take less of a hit as well.

5. No doubt you’ll be eating pie at some point after a big meal and choosing pumpkin over pecan is almost a must once you hear the nutritional facts. 1 piece of pumpkin pie has 350 less calories, 30 g or carbs and 25 g of fat less than 1 piece of pecan pie.

6. One of my all time favourite treats is chocolate covered almonds. Recently I found an alternative that is just as good and half as hard on the body. Dark chocolate roast almonds have 80 calories, 5 g of carbs and 2 g of fat less per ounce of almonds.

Just remember that we don’t always have a choice what is on the table but we do have a choice on what goes in our bodies and what we keep in our own homes. Happy eating and happy holidays!!
