3 Nutritional Tips

As many of us embark on a new exercise regimen we wonder what is going to get us to yield the best results.  Although a well structured training program is very very important in achieving results, nutrition is one of the biggest influences on success in the gym. Here are 3 things I tell people when they are first learning about nutrition:

1.  Eat Breakfast.

Eating a well planned breakfast will get your body off to the start it needs. Having a breakfast that includes protein to allow for a slow steady rise in blood sugar and smart healthy fats (a serving of nuts) to help keep blood sugar levels stable through the morning.  You will have better mental acuity, more energy, fewer cravings, better appetite, and a better ability to focus.

2. Have Protein After Your Workouts

If your goal is fat loss or muscle gain a pure whey protein with over 20 grams of protein per serving is what to look for. You want to avoid products that have chemical sweeteners, added sugar, dyes or artificial flavoring. You also want to find a protein which includes essential amino acids in it. EAA’s are needed for protein synthesis to occur in the body which is necessary for muscle development.  With greater muscle development we can achieve greater overall body composition.

3.  Eat enough

I have found that taking on a “new” style of eating can mean cutting a lot of foods out of your diet. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they don’t replace what they’ve cut out with anything.  Inevitably people trying to gain strength will see no gain in muscle, and people trying to lose weight will not alter their body composition.  It’s ok to eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats and some nuts throughout the day. One of the best tricks is to have snack sized portions of those foods prepared the night before.  This makes grabbing a handful of broccoli just as convenient as a hand full of chips. (yummy right!!??)

No matter what your goal is, it is important to fuel your body effectively to meet the demands of your training plan, your body and your life. Happy eating!
